The root of Groenland (i.e. Greenland) is "ground", it is "ground land" because the friggin' Vikings that colonized that place found friggin' ground in the middle of nowhere. Though accounts do note there was probably vegetation there initially that later disappeared as the ice sheet moved down. Or something like that.
